A Pfotenhilfe employee discovered the animals at around six in the morning on Friday in front of the main gate of the animal shelter. A stranger had secretly placed the bag there, when exactly is unclear.

“I find it barbaric and I suspect that people went on vacation and wanted to get rid of the animals,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler. The two rabbits were immediately checked and cared for. It is a male, uncastrated animal and a Girl.” So I’m afraid that the female rabbit is also pregnant,” says Stadler.

“Animals are not gifts”

She suspects that the animals were an Easter present. “Animals are simply unsuitable as surprises and gifts, because they often end up in a corner unnoticed following a few weeks and then end up in the animal shelter or are even abandoned,” reports the animal shelter manager from her own experience. “When you have to hand over your animals , then you call us and don’t just put them in front of our door,” she says, outraged.

Abandoning an animal is a criminal offence. In this case, administrative penalties of up to EUR 3,750 will be imposed, and up to EUR 7,500 if the offense is repeated.

Information requested

The Pfotenhilfe is now asking for information: Witnesses who have observed the crime or who can identify the owner because of the rather conspicuous bag can use the contact form www.pfotenhilfe.at report. Upon request, information will also be treated confidentially.
