Peñarol deals a blow and defeats Flamengo at the Maracaná

Rio de Janeiro.-The Copa Libertadores offered an exciting first leg match for the quarter-finals between Peñarol and Flamengo at the legendary Maracaná stadium.

The Uruguayan team achieved a surprise 1-0 victory over the Brazilian team, in a match that stood out both for the tactics deployed by the visitors and for the critical refereeing decisions.

From the start of the match, Flamengo had control of the ball. Despite controlling the game, the home team was unable to penetrate the ironclad defence of the team led by Diego Aguirre.

The only goal of the match came thanks to a formidable Uruguayan counter-offensive. Winger Javier Cabrera scored his first goal in a Carbonero shirt, finishing off a play that he himself had started. It was a move with surgical precision: after a long pass from Jaime Báez and the cleverness of Maximiliano Silvera to touch it in, the former Argentinos Juniors winger scored the only goal of the match and gave Peñarol a crucial advantage ahead of the return match.

Despite the defeat, Flamengo had opportunities to tie the game, but were met with a solid performance from Uruguayan goalkeeper Washington Aguerre. However, the Uruguayan team maintained order, concentration and discipline to reduce the suffering. For its part, the team led by Tite, former coach of the Brazilian national team, did not have the injured Pedro and Gabigol, although it did have figures of the caliber of goalkeeper Agustín Rossi, Nicolás de la Cruz, Georgian De Arrascaeta, Gonzalo Plata, Bruno Henrique and Carlos Alcaraz.

Manya could have also increased the score when Chilean Erick Pulgar extended his arm in an attempt to deflect the ball and it hit his hand inside the area. However, Venezuelan referee Jesús Valenzuela did not award a penalty and the VAR did not call it in for review.

Peñarol’s blow brought an end to Fla’s 28-match unbeaten streak (including 17 consecutive wins) at home in the Copa Libertadores. Its last defeat had been against the Uruguayan team, by the same score, on April 3, 2019 (the only victory was scored by the Argentine Lucas Viatri).

Cabrera’s goal caused a real explosion in Montevideo: a video of the goal captured from a building went viral on the social network X (formerly Twitter). Carbonero is a historic team in the competition: it has won it five times. The last time a team from the country won the Libertadores was in 1988, and the winner was Nacional.

Peñarol fueled its dream with a great victory in the first leg. The return match is scheduled for September 26 in Uruguay. The winner of the tie will face the winner of the match between Botafogo and San Pablo, who tied 0-0 in the first match. On the other side of the draw are River and Colo Colo (they tied 1-1 in Santiago and will decide at the Monumental), and Fluminense and Atlético Mineiro (the Cariocas celebrated 1-0 in the opening match).Infobae.
