MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— During May, Pemex plans to make payments to its suppliers for a total of 70 billion pesos, which represents a significant increase of 41% compared to the 49.7 billion pesos paid last April, according to the company itself.
“Last year we had problems with payment to suppliers, that is known. Well, this year we already started to resolve, and we are planning to pay 70 billion pesos in May,” highlighted the director of the firm, Octavio Romero.
The increase in payments to suppliers reflects a trend of continued growth so far this year. During the first quarter of 2024, the company disbursed 95,638 million pesos, which represents an increase of 16% compared to 82,235 million pesos in the same period of the previous year.
“The most important thing is that we seek to continue making important payments to suppliers so that in the month of August, one month before the end of this administration, we have regularized all our due dates with our suppliers. “This is good news and is a consequence of the actions that the president determined for Pemex,” he commented.
Since March 2022, the parastatal has provided public access to amounts, contracts and a detailed report of pending payments to suppliers.
According to company data, the online platform that displays this information contains 48 thousand contracts and has received millions of visits with more than 571 thousand 382 searches carried out to date. In 2023, Pemex made payments totaling 413 billion 937 thousand pesos to suppliers, contractors and oil operators. The increase in projected payments for this year, according to the CEO, is a result of improved financial discipline and a significant reduction in the company’s total debt, which decreased from $131 billion to $101 billion. Pemex faces liquidity problems, growth in clandestine intakes, accidents, labor lawsuits, and to date an increase in overdue debts with suppliers, without forgetting the cost overrun of the Olmeca refinery in Dos Bocas, Tabasco.
