The prostate gland is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It also covers the top of the urethra, the tube that carries urine. Prostate problems can affect urination and sexual health. The following are the diseases that are mainly related to the prostate gland.

1. Prostatitis: Prostatitis is an infection or inflammation of the prostate gland. It is mainly of two types. They are acute prostatitis and chronic prostatitis. Acute prostatitis is caused by an infection. It is usually caused by bacteria. This causes pain, fever and chills before urination. Chronic prostatitis is still not well defined.

Symptoms include constant or recurring pain in the pelvic bone, pain or straining when urinating, feeling the need to urinate more than usual, not being able to urinate completely, and pain during ejaculation. Doctors mainly prescribe antibiotics for its treatment.

2. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH): This is a condition in which the size of the prostate gland increases with age. As the prostate gland enlarges, it also puts pressure on the urethra. Due to this, there is difficulty in urinating. Frequent urination at night, involuntary urination after urination, complete inability to urinate, etc. are all symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. These can cause serious problems including pus and stones in the urine. This condition can be treated with medication and surgery.

3. Prostate Cancer: This is a condition where cancer cells grow in the prostate gland. It may slowly affect other parts of the body as well. As of 2020, it is the second most common cancer among 1.4 million men worldwide. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. Although prostate cancer can be cured with treatment if detected early, symptoms of prostate cancer do not appear early in many people. Prostate cancer is mainly found in men above 50 years of age.

Therefore, regular screening after age 50 is recommended. African-American men with a family history of prostate cancer should begin screening after age 40. A vegetarian diet and regular exercise are essential to prevent cancer. Processed food, smoking, alcohol and red meat should also be avoided.
