The brand of physical exercise equipment Peloton announced, in emails sent to users, an unusual decision: from the day February 27ththe company will stop using the GymKitin order to migrate to its own solution, monitoring Peloton One-Tap.
The integration of the Apple Watch synchronization tool into the company’s products occurred with the launch of Bike Plus. The feature was announced, at the time, as one of the exclusive differences of the exercise bike. In 2022, however, the brand implemented integration with the Watch on all its devices, allowing the monitoring of calories, pace, distance and heart rate via the watch.
In practice, the change should not be very noticeable to users, as integration with the Apple Watch will continue. The Peloton app also natively sends the exercise data it collects to the Health app (Health) — even without using GymKit anymore, as had been happening.
Peloton is advising users to use GymKit only if they have not installed the new version of the software on their devices. The decision will certainly be a disappointment for some Bikes Plus owners, as the presence of the tool now being abandoned was one of the product’s differentiators.
A potential impact of this change could be on the accuracy of training data, as this was one of the tool’s focuses. Although users can continue to see the data and add it to the Health app, this will now depend on the Peloton app, which could also have privacy implications — since, with GymKit, training information was encrypted.
