Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi should not have publicly announced plans to visit Taiwan because China would be able to take advantage of it. This opinion was expressed by Matthew Kroenig, a professor at Georgetown University in Washington, in an article for the American magazine Foreign Policy.
“She should have just come, as in the case of the unexpected visit of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to Kyiv. Pelosi and the administration of US President Joe Biden cannot back down, as this would mean submitting to the will of Beijing,” Kroening said. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to Foreign Policy. The cancellation of the visit might be a sign of weakness, the newspaper notes.
Earlier it became known that Pelosi will travel to Asia and travel to Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore. There was also information regarding her plans to visit Taiwan, but the politician did not comment on this, reports RT. China has threatened military retaliation in the event of the trip, reports Life with reference to the Financial Times. Beijing does not recognize Taiwan’s independence and has urged the West to refrain from official contacts with the island’s authorities. Earlier media reported that China plans to conduct urgent military exercises near Taiwan
