US lawmakers also visited Taiwan, where tensions with China have escalated. It has been 11 days since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi left Taiwan. China launched an armed protest in Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (AIDZ).

On the 14th (local time), the American Association of Taiwanese (AIT) said, “The U.S. congressional delegation made up of five members, including Democrats Ed Mackie, John Garamendy, Alan Loensol, Don Bayer, and Republican Assemblyman Aumua Radwegan, was held on the 14th. I visited Taiwan on the 15th.” All are members of the House of Representatives, except for Senator Markey, who is a member of the Senate.

This visit was made as part of a visit to the Indo-Pacific region without prior notice. The head of the delegation, Rep. Macy, visited Taiwan on the 12th following meeting with President Yoon Seok-yeol in South Korea. On the last 2-3 days, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stayed in Taiwan for two days and one night.

It is known that the delegation will meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and Taiwanese Foreign Minister Wu Zhao-she on the 15th, and visit the Foreign and Defense Committee of the Legislative Council of Taiwan to discuss security and trade issues. Economic cooperation measures such as semiconductor investment are also under discussion.

AIT emphasized that the visit to Taiwan was “achieved while China is raising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and in the region through military exercises” and “It shows once once more the unwavering support of the US Congress towards Taiwan.”

China immediately objected. The Chinese embassy in the United States criticized “US lawmakers should act in accordance with the ‘one China’ policy of the US government. This visit proves that the US does not want stability in the Taiwan Strait.”

Forced protests continued. The Taiwan Central News Agency reported, “On the morning of the 15th, Chinese People’s Liberation Army fighter jets crossed over to Taiwan’s AIDZ seven times.” According to the Ministry of Defense of Taiwan, the number of Chinese fighter jets entering Taiwan’s AIDZ reached 888 this month.
