pelop.gr participates in the 24-hour May Day strike declared by the Unions of Editors, including the Union of Newspaper Editors of Peloponnese – Epirus – Islands (ESIEPIN).
Journalists from all over the country join their voices with Greek society and the trade union movement. Journalists in the electronic media and radio stations are carrying out a 24-hour strike mobilization from 05.00 am on Holy Wednesday 15/3/2024 to 05.00 am on Maundy Thursday, while the previous 24-hour strike was carried out by print media workers.
The relevant announcement states:
FIRST MATCH WITH COMPETITIVE, STRIKE “ATTENDANCE” IN ALL MEDIA, EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS, NON-BINDING UPDATE
This year’s May Day, six years following the exit from the memorandums, finds all workers facing an “undeclared” economic war on behalf of the employer, with the non-existence of Collective Agreements, questioning and capitulation of our collective rights and our working dignity.
In an unprecedented degradation of the quality of life and living, punctuality, poverty, inequalities, restriction of labor rights, precariousness and insecurity in workplaces, emerge as dominant consequences of the applied policies.
By joint decisions of POESY, POSPERT, POEPTYM and ETPTA, a strike is announced for all journalists, technicians, administrators and photojournalists in all Mass Media (print, radio and television, online) in the public and private sector, ERT, GGE, APE- MEP, OTA, Press Offices and website, as follows:
* M. Tuesday, April 30, 2024, from 05.00 a.m. until 05.00 am of M. Wednesday, May 1, 2024, of all journalists, technicians, administrators, photojournalists working in newspapers and magazines
* M. Wednesday, May 1, 2024, from 05.00 a.m. until 05.00 am of M. Thursday, May 2, 2024 of all journalists, technicians, administrators who work in all radio and television and online Mass Media, in the public and private sector, in ERT, in ΓΕΕ, in Municipal Radios and in Press Offices, of all journalists of the country.
Journalists who are members of ESIETHStEE, wherever and if they are employed, are on strike from 05.00 am. of M. Wednesday May 1, 2024 until 0.5.00 a.m. of M. Thursday, May 2, 2024.
The people of information, as an integral part of Greek society, who experience the worsening of daily problems and uncertainty for every employee, unemployed, pensioner and freelancer, we continue to fight for our labor and insurance rights and at the same time we claim the reinstatement of the Collective of Employment Contracts, the restoration of our professional dignity and above all the respect for the rules of journalistic ethics, reacting to every attempt to trivialize the News, using the SLAPPs and “monitoring” phenomena of the journalistic work
The protection and strengthening of jobs, the restoration of the institution of free collective bargaining, the rejection of layoffs, cuts in wages and benefits, the taking of substantial measures in favor of the unemployed, the protection of the insurance funds, so that they are robust and sustainable , and of free public health for all insured persons, are permanent competitive claims not only for the journalistic world but for all workers, for all of society.
The 1the of May, a symbol in the struggle of workers around the world for better working conditions and wages, strengthens and empowers the voice of all workers in the media for:
- SSE in all media in both the public and private sectors. We call on the government to implement without delay its recent assurance to sign collective agreements in the public media and private media employers to sit at the collective bargaining table. To this end, we point out that in the recent EU directive on “adequate minimum wages”, the member states are invited to strengthen the Collective Labor Agreements, so that 80% of the workers are covered by them.
- Substantial measures to tackle the punctuality that is deflating wages and driving workers into destitution.
- Effective measures to tackle unemployment and protect jobs in the private sector
- Measures to support and strengthen the circulation of the press and the love of reading, as is done in other advanced European states
- National and European support measures to protect incomes and jobs in the private sector
- Information with reliability, pluralism and social sensitivity
The defense of labor rights and the restoration of collective labor law is the defense of the principles of Democracy, Equality, Justice, with the ultimate goal of Free Press, reliable and free Information, with rules of ethics, reliability and pluralism.
The Federations call on their members to participate en masse in the May Day strike, the demands of which concern all media workers, in the private and public sectors.
* Excludes colleagues who will cover the strike mobilizations and events of 1her May, which, however, will be shown and broadcast following the end of the strike, the following day.
