Since Saturday, a video clip of a clash between the police and protesters has been active on social media sites following an activist from the Patriotic Europeans Movement Against the Islamization of the West, Pegida, burned a copy of the Qur’an, according to those circulating the video.
It appears from the video clip that some protesters are attacking the activist in an attempt to prevent him from setting fire to a copy of the Qur’an with the help of another person. Some of them were able to reach the activist, who took shelter with police officers who arrested a number of protesters following beating them with batons.
The Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah reported that the mayor of Arnhem, where the incident took place, who is of Moroccan origin, said that burning holy books is not prohibited in the Netherlands.
Markush pointed out that although such an act may be understandable in influencing people, resorting to violence is unacceptable, according to the newspaper.
The newspaper indicated that the aforementioned activist is the leader of the Pegida movement, Edwin Wigensfeld.
