THE panel of judges at the Bandung District Court has ruled that the determination of Pegi Setiawan as a suspect is invalid. The ruling is expected to be a lesson that the people will no longer be made scapegoats.

“The police must base their determination of a suspect on sufficient evidence, not just because of pressure from the public and then arrest them. The people should no longer be the police’s scapegoat,” said Member of Commission III of the DPR, Gilang Dhielafararez, in a written statement, Wednesday (10/7).

According to Gilang, the case experienced by Pegi was a mistake by law enforcement officers. This case is seen as detrimental to Pegi in the future.

“The case of the mistaken arrest of Pegi Setiawan by the West Java Regional Police is a clear example of how errors in law enforcement can ruin someone’s life. Mistakes like this must not be repeated,” said Gilang.

The Deputy Chairman of the DPR’s Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) emphasized that the police must carry out their duties and authorities properly and fairly. Gilang encouraged the Police to evaluate their performance.

In addition, the West Java Regional Police were asked to provide moral and material accountability to Pegi Setiawan. This is to increase public trust in the integrity, professionalism and thoroughness of the police.

“We ask that the police not only apologize officially, but also provide appropriate compensation as a form of responsibility and recognition of the mistakes that occurred,” he said.

He will soon be released from detention.

“To try, grant the pretrial motion once morest the applicant on behalf of Pegi Setiawan and declare it invalid and canceled by law,” said sole judge Eman Sulaeman when reading the verdict at the Bandung District Court, Monday, July 8, 2024. (Z-8)
