The Spanish Congress of Deputies approved on Thursday the inauguration of Pedro Sanchez, of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), as president of the government. With the support of 179 deputies, Mr. Sanchez exceeded the absolute majority of 176 votes necessary in the first investiture vote.

MPs from his party, the Sumar movement, the Catalan Republican Left, the Together for Catalonia party, Bildu, the Basque Nationalist Party, the Galician Nationalist Bloc, and the Canarian Coalition gave their support to Mr. Sanchez.

However, the candidacy was rejected by 171 votes of deputies from the Popular Party, Vox, and the Union of the Navarrese People. The proposal was made by King Felipe VI on October 3, following the failure of the president of the PP during the investiture debate at the end of September. The PP won the July general elections with 32.91% of the votes and 137 seats, followed by the PSOE with 31.77% of the votes and 121 seats.
