“We understand that this situation (the political crisis in Peru) has led them to take arbitrary measures, such as declaring our ambassador (Pablo Monroy) persona non grata. We have been pending and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) has asked him to return soon and he is regarding to arrive in Mexico. Because what matters most to us is taking care of his integrity and that of his family. Also tell them that the SRE has decided not to break relations, among other things, because we need to maintain our embassy to give protection to Mexicans who reside, work, and live in Peru.. The embassy continues in its function, a person in charge has already been appointed and we are still awaiting events in Peru,” AMLO said during his morning session on Wednesday.

Later, before a journalistic question that might not be captured by the official broadcast, AMLO specified that he will not receive Ambassador Monroy because he will be doing a scheduled tour.

“The Secretary of the Interior and the undersecretaries will receive our ambassador who did an extraordinary job in Peru asserting the right to asylum, that’s what bothered the Peruvian authorities. They argue that we did not recognize the president. In foreign policy, we cannot recognize any foreign authority, these are matters that correspond to the peoples,” said the president.
