A 29-year-old man was indicted and imprisoned on Tuesday, suspected of having fatally struck a pedestrian trying to escape a police check on the night of Saturday to Sunday in Paris, we learned from a judicial source.
After 48 hours in police custody, he was brought before an investigating judge who charged him with “manslaughter by the driver of a motorized land vehicle aggravated by drunkenness and hit and run, refusal to comply, violence once morest a person holding public authority”, according to this source. He was remanded in custody.
An escape ended on foot
The young man is suspected of having refused to stop at a police check overnight from Saturday to Sunday around 2 a.m. In his flight, he hit a young woman who was crossing on foot on a protected passage, quai de la Mégisserie (1st arrondissement). The victim, aged 24, died despite the intervention of the emergency services.
The driver continued on his way, pursued by police motorcyclists, until he hit another vehicle. He fled on foot with his passenger, before being caught a little further by the police.
The police custody of the 23-year-old passenger was lifted Monday evening “without prosecution at this stage”, said the judicial source. The investigations were entrusted to the Service for the judicial treatment of accidents.
