The UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen visits Syria and expresses his hope to hold a new round of meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee next month.
Today, Wednesday, the UN envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen expressed his hope that the seventh round of the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee will be held next March, indicating that he is “optimistic regarding that round.”
In statements to reporters, following his meeting with Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad in Damascus, Pedersen said, “We had a deep meeting, during which we discussed all aspects related to the Syrian crisis,” adding that “the need to make progress regarding the constitutional committee.”
The UN envoy to Syria discussed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs the implementation of the adopted Security Council resolutions, and the Syrian government’s continued commitment to UN Security Council resolutions was emphasized.
He continued, “After today’s discussions, I am more optimistic than before regarding the seventh round of talks, and I hope that it will take place next March,” stressing that discussions with the Syrian government “will continue.”
Pedersen indicated that he will meet today with the head of the Syrian government delegation in the Constitutional Committee, and then he will have a meeting with the delegation of the Syrian opposition.
