While manufacturers seem to want to facilitate access to these products for young people, health professionals are sounding the alarm and talking regarding “a gateway to traditional cigarettes.”

Figures that worry and challenge. In its survey named “Perception and uses of Puff among 13-16 year olds”, published this Tuesday, November 14 in collaboration with BVA France, the Alliance Against Tobacco addresses the rise of “new nicotine and tobacco products”. tobacco” among 13 to 16 year olds.

Among them, nicotine beads and sachets, which are increasingly being promoted by manufacturers in the sector. If the Puff has already become a public health subject among the youngest, this study illustrates the knowledge that adolescents have of these new products.

21% have already heard of nicotine pearls, 19% of nicotine sachets, also called “pouches”, and 18% of snus, nicotine sachets which, unlike the other two, contain tobacco.

These have been banned for sale in the European Union since 1992, but authorized in Sweden and Norway.

Worse, among adolescents who claim to know these products, 11%, or 1 in 10 young people aged 13 to 16, admit to having already tried nicotine pearls. In addition, 9% have tested the sachets and 7% have tried snus, despite the impossibility of finding them commercially in France. However, with just a few clicks, it is more than easy to purchase online.

High concentration of nicotine

There are many concerns regarding these new products. As indicated by the Ministry of Health, snus, to be ingested by mouth, contains between 3 and 20 mg of nicotine, while a normal cigarette only contains between 1 and 2 mg. Interviewed by BFMTV.com, Loïc Josseran, president of the Alliance Against Tobacco, explains why this nicotine concentration is problematic.

“We wedge it between the gum and the lip, and when it rubs the product is ingested through the gum. The mouth has the particularity of being vascularized, and the nicotine quickly passes to the brain,” he says.

Furthermore, Le Parisien underlines in an article devoted to the phenomenon that manufacturers embellish these products, in particular pearls, with different perfumes in order to attract a young audience, as was already the case for Puffs. “They are very recreational, seem nice, distracting, but are catastrophic,” adds Loïc Josseran, targeting here the sachets and pearls which are legal in France.

“We are trying to influence the youngest as much as possible, it is a gateway to traditional cigarettes, it is a transition,” denounces the latter once more.

On social networks, in videos totaling hundreds of thousands of views, young people also report the effects provided by the small sachet and explain how to obtain it, and how to consume it.

Call to legislate

Still according to the Ministry of Health, snus, in addition to the dependence they trigger, can also be responsible for various pathologies of the oro-digestive system: oral and pancreatic cancers, lesions of the mucous membranes in the mouth, irreversible retraction of the gums. or even palpitations and vomiting.

Regarding the gums, Loïc Josseran details: “it rubs on the gums, it’s very abrasive.”

Faced with this state of affairs, the Alliance Against Tobacco calls on the executive to react as quickly as possible and to legislate once morest this scourge.

“Every month, every quarter lost, it’s young people who become dependent. It takes political courage to put the industrialists out of the game,” concludes the professor.
