This is the first busy day at Belgian airports. All Flemish students are on vacation from today, one week, therefore, before those of French speakers. The number of passengers is almost back to pre-Covid.
15,000 departures today at Charleroi airport, instead of 12,000 at the start of the week: the high season has started well for travellers.
In the large hall await Dutch-speaking travelers, for whom the holidays begin this evening, but also French people. French-speaking Belgians are few in number today.
This change of pace is ultimately an opportunity for an airport like Charleroi. This makes it possible to break down the periods of peak traffic, as explained by Philippe Verdonck, managing director of Charleroi airport: “From the beginning of July, Flanders is already on vacation, in the south, it will be next week. From there, it will be a mix of all the passengers. The flights are very full, we are more than 90% full. We will go to 100 for the two big months“.
For travelers too, the new calendar is interesting: “When the north was on vacation, they took the opportunity to take all the seats that the south did not take. And vice versa, when the north went back to work, it was the south that went on vacation“.
The most popular destinations are Italy, Spain, France and Morocco.
