the essentials Around a hundred gendarmes and CRS intervened this Monday morning in Portet-sur-Garonne to dislodge caravans installed in the parking lot of the Centrakor store. An evacuation which took place peacefully.

Around a hundred caravans were evacuated to Portet-sur-Garonne this Monday morning. Around 7:15 a.m., the gendarmes from the Muret company, assisted by the CRS, deployed in large numbers around the parking lot of the Centrakor store, opposite Carrefour. The police force numbered more than a hundred. “Following a court order dating from November, we had authorization to carry out this eviction. The soldiers went to meet the occupants several times last week to warn them that their departure would be imminent,” Jean-Luc Blondel, the sub-prefect of Muret. Everything took place calmly. But the evacuation took longer than expected since these itinerant French citizens (CFI) did not want to come out via the path they had created to enter the parking lot. “In October, they cut a fence to enter with their caravans. But to get out, they claim that the fence risks damaging their vehicles. We will therefore have to find another way out,” confided a police officer, present on the places, with a touch of irony.

“We hope to obtain authorizations”

The Centrakor store manager, mainly impacted by the presence of these CFIs, therefore called on a specialized company. At the end of the morning, she lifted a container installed at the back of her shop. “This made it possible to widen the passage so that these families could evacuate the parking lot,” he adds.

Some of these caravans headed towards the Zénith in Toulouse where they should settle down in the afternoon. Will they have permission to stay there? “For the moment no but we hope,” confides a young member of this community.

In the meantime, this court-ordered departure is a small relief for surrounding businesses. “We had no problem with delinquency but these vehicles took up space. This limited the possibility of parking for our customers,” imagines the manager of Centrakor.

A priori, the occupants did not cause any damage during the two months spent in this space. “Apart from the cut fence and the open-air toilets, everything is functional. We will now strengthen the security system so that this type of occupation is no longer possible on land belonging to Carrefour,” confides a security assistant.
