DEAN of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) at the University of Indonesia, Semiarto Aji Purwanto, said that the dream of realizing peace in conflict areas, such as Papua, is still very possible to be realized.
Although Semiarto realizes that the journey to achieve peace is very difficult to carry out. A figure or peacemaker is needed who can be relied on to handle conflict problems. The way to approach it correctly and carry out reconciliation, said Semiarto, can only be done by cooperation from all parties and peacemakers.
“Peace is something real and can still be realized. If so, the question is whether we can still agree on peace, for example in conflict areas like Papua? Not still can and can’t. But it is certain,” he said in his remarks at a public lecture at the University of Indonesia, Depok, Thursday (25/4).
“It is a real thing and can still be realized. So it is a necessity to achieve peace. But peace is not an easy thing to do. Even though we know the task is difficult. It’s not impossible, but it’s not easy either. “That’s what must be learned,” he added.
Semiarto added that perhaps the theory of peace exists. However, to handle and become someone involved in conflict resolution, you still have to study various case studies regarding conflict as well.
“Moreover, it is certainly not easy to be a mediator and peacemaker in a conflict, especially as the escalation can be so high and involve many parties. The challenge of being a peacemaker has difficult dynamics. To reach a peace agreement, including strategy. “All of this must be learned from many case studies,” he concluded. (Dis/Z-7)
