PDIP POLITICIAN Wayan Sudirta assessed that President Joko Widodo’s (Jokowi) speech at the annual session for the 79th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence was too sparing and did not touch on various crucial issues that occurred.

“What I got was that Mr. Jokowi was not very direct and not very straightforward. Secondly, his speech material was also too frugal. He did not mention foreign debt. He did not mention human resources and natural resources. Even the legal issues that were mentioned were only very normative matters such as the judicial commission. He did not provide input on how the judicial commission could play a role,” he said, Friday (16/8).

According to him, in the speech there were three things as products of the Jokowi government, such as the Criminal Code and Omnibus Law, but the explanation was inadequate.

“What we are actually waiting for now is an explanation regarding the issue of unity. The issue of democracy, the issue of social justice, issues related to the law that are highlighted as the politicization of law.”

The problem highlighted is injustice for groups close to power. As if they get special treatment in the eyes of the law. While other groups seem to be sought for their mistakes.

“At least we hope that even though there is no clarification, I hope that we will get an understanding and belief that in the future, unity will be better maintained, democracy will be better maintained. People’s rights will not be castrated with an empty box. But that is not enough for us to grasp,” he said.

He also said that his fellow party member was once a statesman. But now that title is hard to pin on Jokowi anymore.

“I said, Jokowi is a statesman politician. But lately I can’t bring up those words anymore because the basis for that statement is not supported by the data I have.

“It could be that some people still consider Mr. Jokowi to be a statesman politician. But I find it a bit difficult to choose the words to express lately some of his policies as a statesman that we can accept,” he continued.

In his speech, President Jokowi mostly talked about economic achievements that are predicted to grow significantly in various aspects. The former Mayor of Solo did not discuss legal certainty and human rights which have been his priority agenda since he became president.

Indonesia’s economic growth has always been maintained at around 5.0%, higher than the global average growth of 3.4%. The addition of new workers was 21.3 million in the 2015–2024 period. Our debt ratio is also one of the lowest among the G20 and ASEAN countries. On the other hand, Indonesia’s export value has increased by more than 70%, reaching 259 billion US dollars in 2023. The current account balance has gradually continued to strengthen,” he said. (Z-9)
