PCs running Windows 11 21H2, Microsoft announces a forced upgrade

2023-09-06 22:08:47

Windows 11 21H2 is going to be discontinued by Microsoft this year. After two years of support, the operating system will retire on October 10.

Clearly the last major maintenance of the OS is scheduled for Patch Tuesday in October 2023. After this date it will no longer be supported. Microsoft will provide more security updates or bug fixes. PCs under this environment will be on their own which might make them vulnerable to attack over time.

We don’t have an official figure for its popularity, but it’s likely to be on millions of devices. For information Windows 11 21H2 is the initial version of the Windows 11 operating system.

About the affected PCs Microsoft indicates that Windows Update will automatically install a new version that is still supported. The objective is to guarantee a safe environment.

This forced upgrade to a newer version of Windows 11 will begin several months before its end of maintenance and is expected to continue following its end of support. We don’t know which new version Microsoft intends to install. Will it be Windows 11 version 22H2? Perhaps, but it is also possible that 23H2 will be available during the second half of 2023.

Another unanswered question is for unsupported PCs running Windows 11 21H2. Will they be affected by this update to a newer, supported version? If this is not the case, you will have to consider a third-party solution to achieve this.

Regarding Windows 11 22H2, its retirement is scheduled for October 2024.
