PCI-SIG found the culprit in the problem of melting power connectors in the RTX 4090 – these are video card manufacturers

Shortly following the release of the GeForce RTX 4090 video cards, some buyers were faced with the reflow of power connectors 12VHPWR. Now, the PCI-SIG organization, which is responsible for standardizing devices using the PCI interface, including specifications for power connectors, has made an official comment on this situation. In fact, the organization disclaimed responsibility, noting that the video card manufacturers themselves are to blame for everything, while the connector itself has nothing to do with it.

PCI-SIG has called on manufacturers of products with 12+4 pin connectors (12VHPWR) to ensure maximum user safety. The email from the organization states that “PCI-SIG members are responsible for the design, manufacture and testing of their products with the 12VHPWR specification”.

“PCI-SIG wants to convince all consortium members that manufacture and market PCI-SIG technologies (including 12VHPWR) to take all appropriate and reasonable measures to ensure the safety of end users, including reviewing reported consumer-related issues. Participants are reminded that the PCI-SIG specifications provide necessary technical information for interoperability and do not address design requirements, manufacturing methods, materials, safety testing, safety tolerances, or workmanship. When implementing the PCI-SIG specification, participants are responsible for the design, manufacture and testing, including security testing, of their products.the letter says.

According to VideoCardz, with this letter PCI-SIG wants to defend itself once morest any possible claims regarding the design of cables with a 12VHPWR connector.

Previously at NVIDIA reportedthat they know regarding 50 cases of fusion of 12VHPWR connectors. The company concluded that a common cause of the problem is that “the connector was not fully inserted into the video card“. The company called the cases under warranty, but advised users to carefully ensure that the power connector on the video card is inserted all the way.
