The decline of the traditional PC market continued in the third quarter of 2022. Global shipments reached 74.3 million units, down 15% year-on-year, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). .
The institute notes, however, that these shipment volumes remain well above pre-pandemic levels, when PC volumes were largely driven by retail renewals due to the impending end of support for Windows 7.
L’exception Apple
“Consumer demand remained weak, although promotional activity from Apple and other players helped soften the drop and reduce channel inventory by a few weeks overall,” according to Jitesh Ubrani. , one of IDC’s analysts.
“Supply also reacted to new lows by reducing orders, with Apple being the only exception as its third-quarter supply increased to compensate for lost orders stemming from lockdowns in China during the second quarter.
Prices on the rise
IDC is not only watching shipping volumes, but also how average selling prices have changed this quarter. Shortages in recent years have led to noticeable upscale shifts in the product portfolio, according to IDC.
This phenomenon, coupled with rising component and logistics costs, drove average selling prices up for five consecutive quarters to $910 in Q1 22, the highest level since 2004, finds the institute in a communiqué.
