AFTER winning the Suhandinata Cup, last week, the Indonesian junior badminton team added two bronze medals in the individual event at the 2024 World Junior Championships.
PBSI national training coach, who is also the team manager, Rionny Mainaky admitted that the results were not satisfactory. Rionny said that the athletes who filled the Indonesian junior squad this year had good quality but were not strong enough.
“If you say you’re satisfied, you’re definitely not, but you have to admit that we’re not good enough. It can be seen that in the last eight there were several players who should have won but because they made their own mistakes they didn’t succeed,” said Rionny in an official statement, Sunday (13/10).

“They have good potential and quality, we just have to improve in the future to be even better. The coaching team and I as head coach have to work harder next year,” he continued.

Rionny explained several shortcomings that must be immediately improved for Bismo Raya Oktora and friends. Training camps must also be accompanied by careful calculations.
“What is still lacking is fighting power on the field, we have to learn from China and Japan. Playing neatly, stamina and muscle building must also be improved. This is homework that must be done immediately if you don’t want to be left behind,” said Rionny.

“In terms of preparation, this team has been at a training camp since after the Asian Junior Championships. There are several championship tryouts as well as preparation. But seeing this, I think it should be added, this is something we have to prepare for in the future,” he added.
Specifically, Rionny also evaluated the performances of Moh Zaki Ubaidillah and Isyana Syahira Media/Rinjani Kwinara Nastine in the semifinals last Saturday (12/10).
“Ubed is a little closer to winning the match, if only his anticipation could be more active. This is also an experience for him on how to deal with pressure, not only from the opponent but from the whole arena, the huge audience,” said Rionny.

“Isyana/Rinjani’s initial focus must be increased. They lost points from serving and receiving serves several times. This cannot happen in an important match like the semifinals,” he continued.
Meanwhile, women’s singles coach Indra Widjaja spoke about Mutiara Ayu Puspitasari’s inconsistent performance. Mutiara performed quite well in the team event but did not continue in the individual event.
“Indeed, in terms of appearance, Mutiara has not been consistent. There are good things, there are bad things. When the team plays, I might say it is quite extraordinary, but when the individual players don’t have enough control,” said Indra.

“Non-technical factors have a bigger influence. Strategically and technically they have been prepared but because of the burden, none of that comes out,” he added.
Indra further tried to encourage his foster child.
“I have spoken to Mutiara, I said whatever the result must be accepted. This is indeed the last junior for her but not the last for the future. This is a pretty good stepping stone for her to get through the team championship as team captain, how to be responsible with her team even though “In the end, the individual wasn’t very good,” said Indra.
“The most important thing is that this stepping stone can make him talk a lot at the senior level later. Of course with training and observing his rivals. After returning from here, in less than a week Mutiara will immediately compete in Surabaya (Indonesia International Challenge and Indonesia Masters Super 100),” he concluded. (Z-1)
