Payton Pritchard: The Celtics Guard Seeking a Summer Trade for More Playing Time

Fallen at the end of Joe Mazzulla’s bench, Payton Pritchard does not intend to make old bones in Boston. While he is eligible for an extension this summer, the leader hopes for a transfer to find playing time.

After two promising first seasons on the side of Boston, Payton Pritchard seems tired of picking up clover. The arrival of Malcolm Brogdon last offseason and the presence of Marcus Smart and Derrick White on the roster pushed the Oregon native out of Joe Mazzulla’s rotation. While he had played 66 and 71 games respectively in his first two seasons in the League, the leader had to settle for 48 games this year, with reduced playing time (13 minutes).

With reduced rotations in the Playoffs, the 25-year-old hasn’t had much opportunity to shine in recent weeks. The Celtics eliminated, so it’s time for the offseason and some decisions will have to be made by Brad Stevens. Selected in the first round of the 2020 Draft, Pritchard is eligible for a new contract this summer.

That said, not sure he really wants to sign an autograph on the side of Massachusetts. While he had already expressed his discomfort in Boston during the season in relation to his role, the guard now seems eager to leave according to Jared Weiss and Jay King of The Athletic. The ideal would therefore be a transfer this summer.

If the Jaylen Brown file is obviously at the top of the pile of priorities for the Celtics, we will have to see what to do with Payton Pritchard. On paper, the franchise has the upper hand because it has already activated the team option on its 4th year of rookie contract. To see PP from TD Garden, a franchise will have to pay and one can imagine several teams taking an interest in the profile of the leader, a good shooter (40% from afar) and who always brings a large dose of energy to the field. Who will be tempted?
