Paycom Center Renewal Project: Transforming Oklahoma City’s Thunder Home for the Future

Built in 2002, the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City has had its day. The city’s town hall has approved a project to build a new enclosure for the Thunder, meeting the technological challenges of the coming decade. In their press release, the authorities speak of a $900 million project.

We told you regarding it this summer. In Oklahoma City, the desire to build a brand new setting to accommodate the Thunder and large-scale concerts was strong. Because the NBA puts a form of implicit pressure for its teams to play in jewels of technology and comfort, because competing franchises have – for some – already invested in brand new rooms. And the difference is clear and clear.

The town hall is therefore counting on a $900 million project, which will still have to be validated by local administration during a vote on December 12. The idea? Provide the Thunder with a new workplace without skyrocketing local taxes. The amount of 900 million may seem enormous, but it is far from the 1.4 billion dollars required to build the Chase Center in San Francisco for the Warriors. And for the new Clippers room, which will be built in 2024, we are talking regarding 2 billion! In addition, the Thunder has committed to providing a contribution of $50 million.

To set up this project, the town hall obtained a promise from the Thunder to stay in OKC until 2050.

“Perhaps the most important thing regarding this deal is its duration, which is double the commitment made in 2008 and will allow the Thunder to stay here beyond 2050. My children will be my age when this deal ends. For a generation, we will maintain the economic impact and quality of life we enjoyed as a major league city. It’s an investment that pays for itself many times over” – David Holt, Mayor of Oklahoma City.

The town hall also provided a study which indicates that the construction and operation of the enclosure would bring in $600 million per year, while creating 3,000 jobs. It remains to be seen what the citizens decide during the vote in December, but the Thunder should have the promise of a new room before long.
