New X (Twitter) users will have to pay a dollar a year to share posts on the platform, CEO Elon Musk said. You don’t have to pay to read the posts, but if you want to share something, you have to pay a dollar to get the feature. The company is going to pilot this new project in New Zealand and the Philippines before rolling it out globally.
Because ‘Bot’
Elon Musk’s explanation is that the new move is to fight bots on Twitter. The new move, which is part of the ‘Not a Bot’ program, they said, is part of efforts to “reduce spamming and eliminate platform manipulation and bot activity on microblogging site X. New users who don’t want to subscribe can only do ‘read only’ activities like viewing posts and watching videos.”
“Read for free, but pay a dollar a year to write. It’s the only way to fight bots without bothering real users,” -Musk posted on X. “It won’t eliminate bots entirely, but it will make it a thousand times harder for bots to exploit the platform,” he added.
This new program is introduced in addition to X’s main subscription. X is also reportedly planning to split its premium paid subscription service into three membership tiers to make more money and make it profitable by 2024.
