High cholesterol occurs when levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) exceed high-density lipoproteins (HDL) in your blood, leading to plaque buildup in your arteries and a number of health complications, such as stagnant blood flow that can be reversed by a discoloration of your tongue.
What color might be a warning sign?
According to the Frontier Medical Journal of China, a dark purple tongue and an enlarged and twisted hypoglossal vein are a necessary sign of blood stasis.
Stagnation of blood and high cholesterol:
It is a symptom of high cholesterol, and it occurs when blood cannot flow properly through the tissues, causing partial blockages, and raising the pressure in the vessels.
Why does the color of the tongue change?
A purple tongue indicates that the blood is not circulating properly in your body and, in addition, the blood has failed to deliver enough oxygen to the tissues of the body.
Dark red blood also indicates a lack of oxygen, in contrast to the oxygen-rich, bright red blood circulating through the arteries, according to the Times of India website.
Other causes of a purple tongue:
1. Central cyanosis:
It is a lack of saturation of the blood with oxygen, and leads to enlargement and a change in the color of the mucous membranes to blue, such as the tongue.
2. Cancers of the tongue:
According to the American Oral Cancer Foundation, tongue cancers result in a dark red or purple coloration on the surfaces of the mouth.
3. Vitamin Deficiency:
Vitamin deficiencies can also cause discoloration of the tongue.
Complications of high cholesterol:
Cholesterol buildup on the artery walls causes a blood clot to form, blocking blood flow.
If the blood flow to a part of your heart stops, you will have a heart attack.
Similar to a heart attack, when a blood clot blocks blood flow to part of your brain, you will have a stroke.
