Red is Bad: A Shed About Patriotism and the McDonaldization of Life

“We are Poles. We are from here. We love Poland. We do not want to renounce tradition. We are not afraid to take matters into our own hands, we act. We believe in private initiative and hard work. The history of Poland inspires us to design men’s and women’s clothing as well as T-shirts for children. Historical, patriotic or freedom clothing” – you can read on the brand’s website.

– By saying “Red is Bad”, we oppose the enslavement of the individual, a system in which the lives of most people are limited to working beyond their strength, eating fast food and sleeping. I wouldn’t want my child to live in such a world. The McDonaldization of life that we are dealing with is not my vision of the world. In our manifestos and projects, we criticize the EU in its current form – this is how Szopa himself talked about his business in an interview with “Gazeta Wyborcza” in 2018.

He argued then that “he is partly a free-marketer, but he also believes in social solidarity”. – I don’t think there is a contradiction in such thinking. At the same time, he himself I run a business and a foundation where we try to help people in need – he said.

A symbol of success on the right

For right-wing politicians, the young entrepreneur has become a symbol of economic success based on values, emphasizes “Tygodnik Przegląd”. It reminds us that T-shirts and sweatshirts with the inscription “Red is Bad” have become the favorite outfit of the participants of the Independence March, supporters’ circles and members of organizations describing themselves as “right-wing, patriotic and national”.

“Over time, the companies founded by the fashion dictator who valued freedom and independence movements became a supplier and business partner of the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves (RARS) and money literally rained down on them,” describes “Przegląd”.

The RARS Scandal and Paweł Szopa’s Troubles

Szopa is one of the suspects in the case of irregularities at the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves (RARS). In this case, Michał K., the former head of this agency, once a close associate of former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, was arrested in London on Monday.

The investigation into irregularities at RARS was initiated on 1 December 2023.

Paweł Szopa and Michał K., the prosecutor’s office is to present charges participation in an organized criminal group and failure to fulfill obligations and exceed authority in order to achieve financial gain.

According to media reports, Szopa was supposed to supply the Government Agency for Strategic Reserves with power generators intended for Ukraine. He allegedly made extraordinary profits by purchasing equipment for PLN 70 million on the Chinese market and then delivering it to the agency for PLN 350 million. According to Onet’s findings, a fortune flowed to the businessman from RARS – over PLN 500 million in three years.
