Paul Tigchelt: The New Minister of Justice in Belgium | Profile and Expertise

2023-10-22 13:37:53

The president of the Open VLD, Tom Ongena, said it upon the announcement of the resignation of Vincent Van Quickenborne on Friday evening: he wanted to clarify “over the weekend” the name of the successor to his party companion Vincent Van Quickenborne as Minister of Justice.

So it’s done. Our new Minister of Justice is Paul Tigchelt.

His face is not unknown to the general public since he was notably director of OCAM, the Threat Control and Analysis Body during the 2016 attacks. Since October 2020, he has held the position of deputy chief of staff in charge of justice and security within the Van Quickenborne cabinet.

Previously, he was deputy public prosecutor at the Antwerp public prosecutor’s office. From 2003 to 2008, he had already been deputy chief of staff and spokesperson for the Minister of the Interior at the time, Patrick Dewael (Open Vld).

He has therefore been close to the Flemish liberal party for many years. He is described as having an expert profile and as being someone “reassuring“.

Received by the King today

Paul Van Tigchelt will be received today, 5:30 p.m. by the King at the Brussels Palace. The man will be sworn in as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice and the North Sea.
