Rome (AFP) – The Italian Anti-Doping Public Prosecution on Thursday demanded that Frenchman Paul Pogba, the Juventus midfielder, be banned for four years following he was found to be using the stimulant testosterone, according to what a club source revealed to Agence France-Presse.

The source said, “I can confirm that we received this morning this notification from the anti-doping authorities, requesting a four-year suspension,” confirming what was reported in the Italian newspapers.

Pogba (91 international matches), who missed most of the 2022-2023 season and only played 10 matches due to injuries, failed the doping test that he underwent following the match between Juventus and its host Udinese in the first stage of the league, in which he did not participate on August 20. Although he remained on the bench and did not participate in the match, Pogba was one of those randomly selected to undergo the test.

To justify this violation, those close to the player reported that the testosterone comes from a nutritional supplement prescribed by a doctor he consulted in the United States.

The 30-year-old midfielder, who won the 2018 World Cup, has been suspended from playing on reserve since September 11 by the Italian Anti-Doping Agency (Nado).

The penalty may be reduced by half if it is proven that the prohibited substance was not intentionally consumed. The penalty can also be reduced for a few months, if the substance is used “outside the competition period and not related to improving one’s performance.”

The examination of the “B” sample, which Pogba requested in early October, confirmed the presence of high levels of the hormone testosterone.

Testosterone, the male fertility and sex hormone, stimulates muscle growth in the body.

Pogba returned to Juventus of Turin in July 2022, following six seasons with Manchester United.
