Photos released by The Lost Bass Project on Friday (February 16) show the recovered Paul McCartney Höfner bass used to record the Beatles’ first two albums. Found and returned following 51 years following a worldwide hunt.

The photos show some of the damage to the recovered instrument, which includes a cracked neck, a damaged bridge that will need to be replaced, and pickups that no longer work.

According to the search party, the bass was stolen from a van in London’s Notting Hill area in October 1972.

The instrument has been certified by Höfner and McCartney is “incredibly grateful” to everyone involved, according to a statement posted on the star’s website.
