Paul Kagame begins three-day visit to Brazzaville

AA / Pascal Mulegwa

Rwandan President Paul Kagame arrived in Brazzaville on Monday for a three-day state visit to the small central African country that hosts thousands of Rwandan refugees.

At Maya-Maya International Airport, he was welcomed by his Congolese counterpart, Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The Rwandan Head of State will give a speech to the Congolese parliament during his visit. The two presidents will then leave the capital on Tuesday for Oyo in La Cuvette, in northern Congo, to continue their discussions.

Kagame is expected to visit agro-pastoral projects in the company of his host and will sign several economic agreements with his counterpart on the same day, according to the official program of his visit consulted by Anadolu Agency.

The two countries are bound by cooperation agreements affecting several areas, including land, forests, sustainable development, higher education, taxation, armed and security forces, real estate, immigration, etc.

Rwanda is preparing to make major investments in a special economic zone built in Maloukou in the north of the capital Brazzaville.

These investments will be carried by the Cystal Vindior holding company, owned by the Kigali Investment Fund and the Rwandan Patriotic Front, Kagame’s party.

President Kagame’s visit is crucial for his nationals, of whom 8,460 who fled the 1994 genocide lost their refugee status since the end of 2017.

They ask the Congolese authorities for local integration. Kigali has established diplomatic relations with Brazzaville since 1982, but Rwanda only opened its embassy in Congo in 2013.
