Breitner finds emotional words regarding Beckenbauer at the world footballer gala

Beckenbauer’s long-time companion and former teammate Paul Breitner paid emotional tribute to the “lighting figure” at the event in London. “Franz was by far the best and most important player in the history of German football following 1954, when Germany won the World Cup for the first time,” said Breitner, visibly moved.

Breitner and Beckenbauer have had a long-standing friendship. In a recently published tzIn the interview, the 72-year-old recalled that Beckenbauer had a “significant influence on his life’s path” and that he never “said or did anything as an alibi.” Both played together at FC Bayern for four years and won the 1972 European Championship and the 1974 World Cup together in their own country.

Breitner on Beckenbauer: “It’s a great honor to play alongside him”

“In his private life, Franz was an extraordinary person. After retiring from his career, he worked almost every day for more than 40 years to help poor and disadvantaged people. “Finally, I would like to express what a great joy and great honor it was to play alongside him and to be able to call him a friend,” Breitner continued at the FIFA gala.

Even before Breitner stepped up to the microphone to honor Beckenbauer, the English football icon Charlton was bid farewell by Louis Saha and the Brazilian legend by Ronaldo. Charlton died in October last year at the age of 86, Zagallo was 92 years old and died just two days before the “Emperor” on January 5, 2024.
