Paul Alexander, who lived in an iron lung for more than 70 years, has died

The man contracted polio in 1952, and was completely paralyzed from the neck down as a result of the disease. To solve his breathing problems, he was placed in an iron lung that covered his entire body. If the man had gotten out of the structure, he would have been able to breathe for a few minutes at most.

The machine kept him alive for seven decades, Paul Alexander died on Monday, March 11.

A Women page recently gave a detailed account of the man’s life. Paul Alexander studied law at the University of Texas and took the bar exam in 1984. He also wrote an autobiographical book entitled Three Minutes for a Dog: My Life in an Iron Lung. The work took five years as he typed the words with a pencil held in his mouth. He recently joined TikTok with the username @ironlungman, happily answering questions regarding what happens to him in the event of a power outage, for example.

In the United States, following the death of Paul Alexander, there is only one patient who uses an iron lung, while at the outbreak of World War II, the number of American patients was close to a thousand.
