“Haven’t heard anything from the Spock’s Beard camp in a long time”, that’s what popped into my head a few days ago. The last output I know of was last year’s solo album Ryo Okumoto.

Some of the colleagues from his main band worked there, who are now called Pattern Seeking Animals under the leadership of the producer and composer John Boegehold her now fourth album with the eerily interesting name Spooky Action At A Distance publish.

But don’t worry, the content of the new record from the four warriors from Los Angeles is far less horrifying. Rather, play Pattern Seeking Animals their proven ingredients.

There are the striking melodies, which are very close to retro prog Spock’s Beard but also contain other elements such as Latin fragments and pop rock. A song like this is guaranteed to be a catchy tune Window to the Worldthat you HERE you can hear and in a series with bombastic songs like Bulletproof or the bouncer Love Is Still the Light stands.

Retroprog with rock pop flair and vice versa

Generally standing Pattern Seeking Animals even more so than the regular band for straightforward rock songs with a retro prog flair. Sometimes the pendulum swings more strongly in the prog direction, like in long track He Once Was with opulent instrumental passages including use of strings and a wide range of conveyed musical moods. As always, the singing goes perfectly with this Ted Leonardwhich is practically made for this type of music.

Thematically there is no clear line, lyrically there is pretty much everything between a reflective Nordic king and alien invasions. There are some innovations compared to its predecessor, especially with regards to some sounds. In these details, changes are noticeable in a direct comparison, overall they show Pattern Seeking Animals a high degree of musical consistency on their new work. You can hear that Spooky Action At A Distance very clearly, because compared to the previous albums there is no noticeable decrease or gain.

Conclusion
The fourth album from the prog supergroup Pattern-Seeking Animals is a statement and allows changes in the details to be seen. Should be wholesale Spooky Action At A Distance provide the fan with sufficient moments of well-being. 8,5 / 10
