Patrino Carnival: The Secret of Black Beauty – A mystery play about the raisin trade in 19th century Patras – 2024-03-01 06:20:20

On Saturday 24/2 the Hidden Treasure crews were challenged to discover the ‘Secret of Black Beauty’ by following the raisin road in a navigational game that lasted over 6 hours across the city.

A veil of mystery covered the Patras of 1896 and the crews learned regarding the history of the city and “the port of the raisin”, following first passing through various trials and points of the era. Starting from the warehouses of the raisin merchant Vourloumis (today’s Orofos theater), the crews received bags of raisins, retention slips, played at the raisin exchange and were stamped at the Customs.

With an old map of Patras and a magnifying glass, the navigation continued throughout the city, from the offices of the “Peloponnisos” newspaper to the electoral center of Achilleas Gerokostopoulos, the house of the murdered Dionysios Fragopoulos and the mansion of Kolla.

From there, they gathered at the Notos jazz bar to watch the performance of “Black Beauty” Loreley in a brown sandan of the time. Finally, following searching balconies with hearts to gather evidence, they passed the stationmaster and ended up at the Telegraph Office (today the English Consulate), in order to telegraph the code word and unlock the secret trade agreement with the port of Hamburg.

The solution to the puzzle was the code word “KIRK”. Black beauty, black gold or black-eyed Circe were the names of the raisin at that time.
