In a statement, the “Time of Patras” faction, led by George Roros, states:
“The lack of water supply in many areas of the city tends to become an epidemic phenomenon again this year.
The protests of our fellow citizens are intensifying for the lack of water and also for the repeated damage to the water supply network that is not being repaired.
It could be answered that everything is to blame for climate change, i.e. extreme weather events, heat waves and droughts of great intensity.
The Municipal authority bears FULL responsibility.
When the Asterio Dam (Pirou-Parapirou) was to be completed (period 2018-2019) the then SYRIZA government proposed to the Mayor of Patreon another gift for the city. Creation of an Intermunicipal body with the Municipalities of Erymanthos and Western Achaia and the operation and management of the dam.
The municipal authority of Mr. Peletidis refused to receive the god-sent gift.
We remind you that there was a previous study by the University of Patras. For the operation of the Dam, it was predicted that approximately two million euros would be required, when only for the operation of the pumping stations, during the same period of time, the Municipality of Patreon paid approximately three million euros.
The amounts he pays today to PPC with the increase in energy prices have jumped to around five million.
Every bona fide person understands that with the establishment and operation of the inter-municipal body, an “economy of scale” is created with the simultaneous reduction and abolition of over-pumping, without burdening the water table.
It would supply, for a fee, the prefecture’s industrial zone to attract investment for the benefit of the many.
The change of government in 2019 aided by the Peletidis policy (the dam in the state and to supply free water) led to the management of the dam being privately owned in 2021.
We remind you that in March 2020 the proposal to create an inter-municipal body was voted by the opposition with a large majority in the Municipal Council 26 against 19, it was not implemented by Mr. Peletidis.
We note that the other two municipalities as well as a number of organizations (TEE etc.) were positive about the creation of the Intermunicipal organization.
In the relevant competition, New Democracy, faithful to the doctrine of water to private individuals, donated 8.5 million from the public investment program.
The main question remains: will the government of New Democracy preserve water as a social good or the local Municipalities?
So the Municipality of Patreon is coming to deal with the issues of water scarcity with new wells even in natura areas.
We call on the Peletidis Municipal Authority to put aside party affiliation and dogmatic obsessions.
In the next period, the contract with the dam management contractor is completed. To immediately start a dialogue in the Municipal Council, with the neighboring Municipalities, with the competent local bodies, in order to prepare a scientifically and financially documented proposal for the claim of an Intermunicipal body for the management of the Dam.
Unless the municipal authority is satisfied with revolutionary gymnastics, but with the neighborhoods of Patras saying the water is a lake”.
