Unprotected once morest the invasion of caterpillars are the walkers, the animals and the pine trees in Dasyllio in Patrasfollowing the absence of spraying by the Municipality during the previous months.
Characteristic of the desperation created by the stormy attack of the caterpillars is the large sign that the managers of the cafe “Dexameni” were forced to post at the entrance of the place: They inform the customers regarding the existence of the caterpillars and “show” as the person responsible for dealing with them Municipality of Patreon.
In particular, in the “Reservoir” announcement, it is written: “WATCH OUT CATERPILLAR: In the area of Dasyllio, including the “Reservoir”, it is the season when the “pine caterpillar”, known as pitiocampi, circulates. It is one of the most important enemies of pines, but also an allergenic source for humans and pets during the few days they live.
In order to successfully deal with pitiocampi, due to the large area of the pine forest, the project should be undertaken by the local government or state agencies that have the appropriate equipment.”
Employees of the cafe, speaking to “Peloponnisos”, noted that the sign was posted following repeated complaints from customers who suffered from allergies or were bitten by the caterpillars. Many of them protested strongly to the managers of the store, without of course knowing that the Municipality of Patreon and not the company is responsible for the spraying.
WHAT SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED
As the agronomist Costas Panagopoulos noted in “P”, the treatment of the caterpillars is done in three phases: Initially, during the months of February and March, when the phenomenon is at its peak, the cocoons can be carefully cut, so as not to eject the hairs of the caterpillar. The next phase of their fight is during the months of July to September, with pheromone traps that are placed on the lower branches of the tree and which attract the male insects, trapping them and preventing reproduction. And the third, by spraying with special insecticides during the months of October and November, when the caterpillars are in their first and second stages of development, and before they form nests on the trees.”
“PREVENTIVE MEASURES ARE NECESSARY”
The member of the Ecological Movement of Patras, Giorgos Kanellis, speaking to “P”pointed out the need to deal with the caterpillars: “Especially in urban forests, such as Dasyllio, preventive measures are necessary to avoid side effects on citizens and the stripping of pine trees.
Especially, from February to March, these phenomena are more intense and the cocoons on the pines are evident. It is good to avoid contact with the caterpillars, both by humans and animals, because the hairs that the caterpillars have on their bodies act as sensors, but at the same time they are thrown by the caterpillars in case they feel threatened and cause allergies.
In any case, it is imperative on the part of the Municipality to protect from the caterpillars this great natural green lung of the city that is Dasyllio”.
