Three days have passed and the human mind cannot fathom how two young children full of dreams for life were ingloriously lost. An incomprehensible action, criminal as shown by a video that came to the public, was enough to cut the thread of life of 20-year-old Yiannis Stergiou and 18-year-old Giorgos Papadopoulos, who were buried on Saturday in an atmosphere of sorrow.

“P” performed an autopsy on the New National Highway, at the height of Aretha, to observe the operation of the traffic lights where thousands of vehicles pass daily. There may not have been an Achaean who did not cross this particular road, the crossroads having been occupied many times due to the conflicts that have taken place there.

THE CRASH

On Thursday night, the clock read 22.24. The driver of the black Audi traveling on Patras-Athens towards Rio decided to make a left turn at Aretha. The traffic light regulating the left turn was red and the conclusion is drawn from the fact that at the same time in the opposite direction of Patras-Athens to Patras it was “pure green”. The machine in which the deceased young men were riding was continuing its course correctly, at a speed that will be determined by the authorities. But there was no time to react to avoid the collision with the black Audi which ignored the red light, although the riders of the machine made an effort to drop the machine a few meters before the impact.

On the Patras-Athens National Highway, at the level of Aretha Street in the direction of Rio, the traffic light turns “green” for the main stream and those heading towards Rio, but for the left turn to Aretha it remains “red” and changes color several seconds later . A possible scenario is that the car driver saw the green marking for the main stream and made the fatal decision to turn, while the left turn light remained red!

However, in this case of the traffic accident, it is clear, based on the times of the particular traffic lights, that the driver of the car ran a red light!

In addition, admittedly, on other occasions than the fatal traffic accident on Thursday, the traffic lights on the National Highway allowing left turns on perpendicular roads are regularly violated by drivers, as many, in order not to wait for it to change to green once more, speed up while they see the orange marking from afar.

THE PROPOSAL

The blood tax we pay every day on the country’s roads must be reduced. In foreign countries, having found that many traffic accidents occurred at high-traffic road intersections where vehicles can develop speed, they have proceeded to create roundregardings at dangerous points.

We also have similar cases, where hundreds of traffic accidents have occurred in the past, in Patras, with the typical entry point to the University General Hospital of Patras in Rio.

There, until a few years ago, the collision of vehicles was an almost daily phenomenon, which no longer occurs due to the existence of the junction. Significant progress in reducing traffic is also being made at the junction in Koukouli, where not only has traffic congestion been eased, but accidents do not occur regularly.
