An application for injunctive measures against the Municipality of Patras and DEYAP was filed at the Court of First Instance of Patras by residents of the Exo Agyia area requesting the immediate stoppage of the construction of the sewage pumping station in an area that has been purchased, has been designated and has been used for years as a square, at the junction of Heroes Polytechnic and Agios Konstantinos Agyias, in the once emblematic Romantza of Patras.
The petition is signed by 36 residents of Agia, while the relevant initiative is supported by the vast majority of residents, merchants and professionals of the area.
As stated in the application for injunctive measures, for the expropriation of the site where the nearly 4-meter-high pumping station is currently being built 3,191,049 euros were spent, money coming mainly from the “Green Fund” and from the “Theseas 2” program, with the justification that the project will improve the quality of life of the residents.
Completely unexpectedly, in March 2024, the site was reserved by the Municipality and DEYPAP so that – without the slightest information or warning – the construction works of a pumping station could begin, thus canceling, for the most part, the use of the site as a square. And the Municipality, as stated in the request for injunctive measures of the residents, in order to prevent any reactions, did not place the slightest informational signage in the area to such an extent that even today those who pass in front of the pumping station wonder “what is being built there?”.
The pumping station, therefore, as stated in the request for injunctive measures, will in practice cancel a square on the beach front of Patras – on the same front that the Municipality of Patreon gives priority to upgrading the image of the city and the quality of life of the citizens.
The pumping station, as reported by the residents, according to the relevant decision of the Municipal Council “will resemble a two-story building with a ground floor and a first floor (!) with an area of 92.50 sq.m. & a building height of 3.95 m. and the resulting emissions of continuous noise and unpleasant odors from the waste water will certainly lead to a significant deterioration of the disputed square and the residential environment of the area, with the consequence that we and the other residents of the area to deprive ourselves of the benefits that derive from the current shared use of the specific space. After all, based on the lessons of common experience and common sense, no one is going to choose to go to a square where they will be bothered by noises and smells and in which there will be a massive construction of dubious aesthetics made of concrete that even functioned as a sewage pumping station… ».
So the locals ask for the obvious. In other words, they request that the Municipality and DEVAP, as well as “the third parties added by them, be prohibited from carrying out any construction work (excavation, laying of concrete, engraving of pillars and walls, construction of load-bearing structures and building frameworks in general, shaping of the surrounding area etc.) within the already demarcated area, surface area 92.50 sq.m. or whatever it is, which is intended for the construction of a pumping station and which is located at the junction of Iroon Polytechneiou and Agios Konstantinou streets on the square of O.T. 1773 (formerly “Romanza”) of the approved City Plan of Patras”.
The important thing is that there are other areas that belong to the State Real Estate Service or to TAIPED, but the Municipality preferred the easy solution.
The discussion of the interim measures will take place on Monday, August 5.
