About the book and the author:
Vassilis Lada’s first poetry collection, John and Mary, two printing presses, was released in January 1973. The romantic couple during the years of the Junta. Giannis writes to his imprisoned resistance friend Lefteris, constantly promising to visit him. The collection was released under the pseudonym Vassilis Arfanis, as were the subsequent collections The Date (1984), Evening at Home (1986), The Dead Child (1990), Double Town (1996), Parable (2001), Apkreo (2004). During this long period of time, many times, in poetry readings, the paradox happened that Vassilis Ladas was invited to read poems by… Vassilis Arfanis. The game with Arfanis and the division had to end. Dinners (2011), and Album (2020), released under his real name. With the present edition of all the poems, the “philological” order is fully restored.
Until the Parable, the love couple circulates in his poetry collections. Gathered in existence, among people who have no power to acquire much and are not content with little. The media dominates.
From the Parable, the outside begins to project. The others, the world, the contrasts. In Apokreo (which, of course, has nothing to do with the nylon carnival of the hometown) the outside dominates, as in the two following collections and the Six Meteora Poems (2023), which are included in the edition, without having been housed in another collection.
Vassilis Ladas was born in 1946 in Patras, where he lives. He studied law in Thessaloniki. In addition to his poems, he has published non-fiction: The City and the Myth (2002), Rion-Antirion (The Tooth, 2004), Bodiless Head (Patakis, 2007), Mussafferat: The Thousand and One Nights of a Refugee Camp (Futura, 2008) ), Cricket Games (Gavrielidis, 2012, State Award), African Dust (Gavrielidis, 2015), In the Age of Abraham, a chronicle of the history of the Film Club of Patras, 1978-2017 (Achaikes Editions, 2017), The ship of K.P .Cavafi (Mandragoras, 2021), Cyclists (KΨM, 2022).
In 2005, the theatrical adaptation of Rion-Antirion’s work was performed at the DIPETHE Agriniou, as a co-production with the DIPETHE Patras. From the Ionian Theater, in 2006, his work “Immoral Poetry”, an anthology of poems and prose regarding prostitutes, brothels and their clients, was presented.
