It took about 40 years for them to flee to the USto finally return to the place that “gave birth” to them and now to are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Patras.
These are three unique archaeological treasures that repatriated on January 22, 2024 from the MC Carlos Museum of Emory University, based in Atlanta, United States of America.
The three ancient objects had been purchased by the MC Carlos Museum in the years 2002 and 2003 and they came from illegal excavations in Greece in the 1980s and 1990s. Through illegal channels and antiquarian smuggling rings, they reached the other side of the Atlantic.
These are the projects:
1. Clay Minoan urn with a written representation of fish (mid 14th century BC)
2. Marble seated male figure from an Attic tomb naiscus (350-325 BC)
3. Marble statue of Artemis resting on a tree trunk (second half of the 2nd century BC
The three repatriated antiquities at the Archaeological Museum of Patras
The antiquities are already freely exhibited in the reception area of the Archaeological Museum of Patras and will remain accessible to the public until December 22.
This exhibition is organized by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia, in collaboration with the Directorate of Documentation and Protection of Cultural Properties and the Directorate of Archaeological Museums, Exhibitions and Educational Programs of the Ministry of Culture.
It is worth noting that the specific antiquities are exhibited in the exact same place as the traveling photographic exhibition entitled: “Stolen past – Lost future”, which is presented at the Archaeological Museum of Patras from June 20 of this year.
As noted by Dr. Anastasia Koumousi, archaeologist-Byzantineologist and director of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Achaia “with the coexistence of the two exhibitions, i.e. the photographic exhibition as well as the repatriated original antiquities, visitors are given the opportunity to be informed and raise awareness of issues related to the fight against the international crime of antiquities and the illegal trafficking of cultural goods, as well as highlighting of joint efforts to preserve cultural heritage at national, European and global level”.
The entrance is open during the days and hours of operation of the Archaeological Museum of Patras.
