Patras: Bad summer season, hopes due to payments

For one more year the summer sales season has not met the expectations of shop ownerscausing reflection on what may follow in the coming months.

With just one week left until the summer sale endsthe merchants of Patras did not see the turnovers they would like. THE secretary of the Trade Association of Patras Tasos Nikolakopoulos makes an account of the summer sales, communicating with the Patrinos that the offers will continue.

With a realistic approach, Mr. Nikolakopoulos estimated that the image of the market during the summer sales was a “natural continuation of the summer season”. As he pointed out: “The sales did not perform as expected. However, these days payments are made to pensions, benefits and wages. Let’s not forget that most people are now taking stock of their finances after the summer holidays. We are a few days before the start of the school year and every year the traffic is a little higher. We are waiting too.”

However, the summer sales may end at the end of August, but already local merchants are gearing up for some extra few-day specials. Specifically, the secretary of the Trade Association noted: “The offers will continue for the first ten days. Consumers will also find products for the school season. School supplies, clothes, shoes, everything is expected to be on offer.”

More generally, the impression given is that the market as a whole is trying to get back on its feetbut based on today’s data, shopkeepers estimate that this winter will bring a contraction in turnover due to price increases in food, fuel and energy. “All of these have an impact on our turnover because they affect the consumer’s wallet. We, however, remain here. We try to provide consumers with the best possible prices and quality products, in order to keep active the relationship of trust we have built with our customers” concluded Mr. Nikolakopoulos.

For one more year, local businesses are called upon to endure situations of reduced turnoverbut also of increased pressure from the online market, as a result of which they are condemned to “permanent offers” to withstand the competition and survive.
