The Municipality of Patreon is proceeding with the procedures for the reuse of the space in Agora Argyri, which until a few years ago operated as a restaurant. Last week, the municipal Authority made a first attempt to advance the procedures to find a new tenant for the property to operate it as a restaurant.
The deputy mayor of municipal property, Rena Gesta, had proposed 1,300 euros for the monthly rent, following a survey she did in the area regarding how rents fluctuate.
Vassilis Aivalis, for his part, counter-proposed to investigate whether other uses can be added to the property, such as for cultural or touristic purposes, always with respect to the style of the property.
Mrs. Gesta listened to Aivali’s proposal and committed to examining whether it is allowed to add other uses of land for the rental of the property and following a detailed discussion that took place, the chairman of the Committee, Michalis Anastasiou, withdrew the matter, in order to redefine its uses to space rental. The matter will come back to a new meeting in the next period.
We remind you that months ago the Municipality had evicted the previous tenant who used the space for six years. As it was revealed, the tenant had not paid rent for the past five years, but it had gone unnoticed because money was being paid… for the electricity bill!
The tangle of the case began to unravel in the city council. The responsible deputy mayor at the time, Anastasia Togiopoulou, had revealed that the company housed in Agora Argyri had not paid rent to the Municipality in the last five years. At the same time, the municipal services had not noticed the practice of the business since, as the Deputy Mayor said, “the rent is paid to the financial service, but there is no connection with the municipal property” so that a check might be made as to whether the payments were being made.
In fact, it had become known that the Argyri Market building had an electricity supply and the tenants of the premises paid the Municipality for the electricity they consumed according to the square meters of their lease. The tenant appeared to be paying the electricity by arrangement, so the municipal authorities concluded that the rent was also being paid, so there were no suspicions of arrears!
