Patient with skin cancer was successfully treated at Villa Hayes Regional Hospital

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Health reported the first case of skin cancer that was successfully treated at the Villa Hayes Regional Hospital. The beneficiary is a 71-year-old patient, who was diagnosed early through a biopsy and was given timely treatment.

The health ministry highlighted the report by oncology surgery specialist Juan Amarilla, who performed the treatment with surgery, and the favorable prognosis for this type of case.

The doctor explained that the patient came to the consultation for an ulcerated lesion on the lower left eyelid and that following the biopsy, the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma was confirmed, which is a common skin cancer, but highly curable if detected in time.

Basal cell carcinoma originates in the basal cells found in the outer layer of the skin, usually grows slowly, and rarely spreads to other parts of the body. However, if left untreated, it can invade surrounding tissues and cause significant damage. Surgery is the most common treatment for basal cell carcinoma.

Dr. Amarilla indicated that in this case two procedures were performed and one of them was “Excision with safety margins,” a technique that consists of removing the cancerous lesion with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue, to ensure that no cancer cells remain. The second was “lower eyelid plasty” or reconstruction to restore its shape and function.

The Ministry of Health stresses that the incorporation of Dr. Amarilla to the team at the Villa Hayes Regional Hospital represents an important step forward for the care of cancer patients in the region.

The specialist offers medical consultations to cancer and general surgery patients on Thursday followingnoons and performs scheduled and emergency surgeries on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Consultations at the office are done on a first-come, first-serve basis.
