Patent: AirPods could be used for Fall/Accident Detection

As we always show here, despite the resources of Fall and Accident Detection Although they are quite useful, saving people from various complicated situations, they also have accuracy problems. Particularly in the case of the second, the false positives generated are so large as to have a significant impact on the functioning of emergency services.

In that regard, according to Patently Applea patent registered by Apple details how AirPods could be used to improve feature accuracy. By being worn on the head, the headphones would increase the movement detection area, as the Apple Watch is worn on the wrist and the iPhone is worn with the hands, when it is not in the user’s pocket.

In registered industrial property, there is a combination of several sources of information about the user’s movements to detect a fall or accident. The AirPods, in this case, could be one of them, as, through an antenna to be included in the headphones, they would transmit data about movements to the other device in the arrangement, thus increasing the precision of the process.

To generate the data, an additional motion sensor would also have to be included in the AirPods, in order to detect the user’s accelerations, just as the Apple Watch and iPhone do. In this way, upon reaching a certain level of movement and in specific ways, it would be possible, together with data from other devices, to detect possible accidents.

The main advance provided by the novelty, of course, would be to better detect accidents that consist of injuries involving the head, such as concussions and the like. An optical sensor could also be included to better determine when the headphones are being used.

By extending the detection area to the head, one more monitoring point is added. Thus, even when an accident causes movements in one part of the body but not another, the more complete system of devices would have more advanced detection capabilities, thus increasing accuracy.

It is worth remembering that this is just the registration of a patent, with no prediction of when or if we will actually see an application of the creation. Still, rumors suggest that Apple is working on new health and wellness features for the AirPods, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see something along the lines of the patent.

The industrial property is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office under number 20230277129.
