DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Wearing a jean jacket as she walked the runway, Patch was declared the champion of the Iowa Drake University Prettiest Bulldog contest.
The 2-year-old English bulldog beat out 28 other entrants from six states on Monday night to win the award. She will now be the mascot of the university and the contest kicks off the school’s track and field competition, which will take place in the coming days. The events will take place at the university stadium, located in Des Moines.
Patch’s entrance caused a stir as he carefully stepped through a hoop on the catwalk, drawing cheers from a crowd of onlookers. Its owners, Jennifer Hinton and Joel Kornder, said they worked on the hoop routine months before the competition.

After being declared the winner of the pageant, Patch traded in the jean jacket for a silken cape and crown, fitting for her role as the mascot for the Drake University pageant and as the school’s representative for the coming year.
Patch is a rescue dog and was among nine rescue dogs that entered the contest.
