passengers evacuated – The Time

Fear aboard a ferry full of tourists who were heading from Piombino to Portoferraio, on the Island of Elba. A fire broke out in the engine room, forcing the evacuation of the hull and the return to the port of departure. The fire was extinguished by the firefighters who say that the intervention is currently under control. The evacuation operations of the passengers have also ended, and they are all on land. There are no reports of injured people who required the intervention of the 118 health workers.

There were about 300 people on board, including passengers and staff of the shipping company. The Fire Department intervened on site with 3 teams, 3 ladder trucks, 2 air trucks, personnel from the Livorno and Grosseto diving units and with the Drago helicopter from the Cecina VF flight department. The men of the coast guard and the fire department disembarked the passengers with slides and no injuries were reported. Only one passenger suffered small abrasions due to the descent from the slide and another had a panic attack but both refused hospitalization.
