Rising gasoline costs and long traffic jams are all good reasons to get into a car with more people. But is the driver properly insured in case something goes wrong? Three questions regarding the passenger insurance.
1. Why should you also take out passenger insurance?
Car owners are required to have car insurance, also known as third party liability insurance. In many situations, this covers damage to other people and vehicles in the event of an accident. As a victim of an accident, damages can be recovered from the perpetrator.
“But if you, as a driver, cause an accident yourself, you are not entitled to anything with normal third-party liability insurance,” says Menno Dijcks of Independer. And that’s where the benefits of renter’s insurance come into play.
The passenger insurance does not look at who is responsible for the damage, but simply pays out in many situations. Because no investigation is required into the cause and the perpetrator, payment is a lot faster. “With third party liability insurance, it can sometimes take years before payment is made,” says Dijcks.
Not everyone can wait that long for money, for example entrepreneurs who cannot work for a while and no longer have an income. Passenger insurance is especially useful in the event of injury.
2. Which passenger insurance is useful to take out?
There are two types of passenger insurance. Dijcks recommends the Passenger Damage Insurance (SVI) of approximately 5 euros per month: “It is broad coverage that compensates for the actual damage suffered.” This might concern items, the loss of income because someone is temporarily unable to work, or the costs of a funeral.
The cheaper variant is called the Passenger accident insurance (OIV) and costs regarding 3 euros per month. The OIV only pays out if someone has died as a result of a car accident or has become permanently disabled.
The OIV has a fixed amount for certain injuries and damage. This means that a dancer who loses a foot will receive the same amount as an office worker who loses a foot. While the dancer loses his or her source of income.
3. Who must take out this insurance?
Passenger insurance is a supplementary insurance to car insurance. It is linked to a vehicle and must be locked by the owner. The insurance cannot therefore be taken out separately by someone who often gets into the car of others.
When the driver has passenger insurance, the insurance applies to everyone and all items in his or her car. More than one in three people who take out car insurance also choose the SVI, according to figures from Independer.
