It was hoped for a stunt for Vitesse in Alkmaar and despite a great dominance of AZ, it took quite some time for the Arnhem team. Dani de Wit broke the ban for AZ in the 53rd minute and Vangelis Pavlidis ended the game: 2-0.
Thanks to the victory, AZ continues to compete for third place in the Premier League and direct relegation is getting closer for Vitesse.

De Wit thought he had put AZ 1-0 early on, but VAR had found that Pavlidis had been offside in the run-up to the goal. This left the score 0-0 and the score remained until half-time, despite one-way traffic towards Vitesse keeper Eloy Room’s goal.
De Wit heads well and hits the post
Miraculously, Room kept a clean sheet in the first half and in the second half the first chance actually went to the visitors. Thomas Buitink escaped the attention of the AZ defense and shot hard through the legs of Riechedly Bazoer and onto the fists of goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.
A little later it was a hit for AZ. Dani de Wit cleverly headed a corner behind Room.

Pavlidis himself scored the 2-0, his 24th goal of the season. The Premier League top scorer stole the ball from Carlens Arcus on the halfway line, passed it to substitute Myron van Brederode and then slid his cross into the goal.
With his goal, the Greek climbed to fourth place on the all-time top scorers list of AZ in the Premier League. With 52 goals he left Mounir El Hamdaoui (51) and Kenneth Perez (51) behind him. Only Kees Kist (212), Pier Tol (85) and Kristen Nygaard (82) made more.
De Wit hit the outside of the post in the final phase and so it remained 2-0 in Alkmaar.
